No doubt you’ve heard us wax lyrical about Chippendale. At Time Out, we’re a bit obsessed with the up-and-coming suburb, with its back-door jazz rehearsals in flop houses, burnt-down tattoo parlours, cutting-edge art galleries, same-sex salsa classes and now Freda’s - the new bar from Simon Cancio, Marty Campaign and chef Ibrahim Kasif. It’s amazing that Chippendale finally has somewhere cool to drink. Everything’s a smart-yet-simple affair here, from the evening menu to the daily sandwich specials. You can bet the bread's good, too. Cancio comes with quite the pedigree, having punched dough at Bourke Street Bakery and, more recently, at Newtown bread darlings Luxe.
There's a lot to love about Bar Mattino, despite its rather unglamorous possie on Chippendale's Abercrombie Street. It's a stylish inner-city cafe with a loyal band of followers, due to the hefty servings of well-priced British fare. Rule Britannia and order some blood pudding with your breakfast.
Mission and NG Art Gallery were founded in Chippendale in 2007, bringing together the joint visions of award-winning restaurateur Piera Potter and renowned art dealer Nicky Ginsberg.
The restaurant is named ‘Mission’ for the Sydney City Missionaries who first occupied the spectacular Gothic Revival-style church, later remodelled by local architect Jason Blake. The NG Art Gallery is perfectly accommodated in the upstairs loft displaying the country's most celebrated artists, alongside it’s budding new talent.
Downstairs at Mission Restaurant Bar, head chef David Walker is fast gaining an impressive reputation. His style exudes a passion for traditional Mediterranean favourites, presented with a twist. He creates robust, rustic dishes of astonishing flavour featuring the finest in seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.
Some people think this spot is a little dingy. Others think it's cosy and friendly. If you live nearby, call in and explore it.
Mulligan's Irish Restaurant opened in April 1994 with our dream to proudly promote Irish fare, music and hospitality in our
new found home Sydney. Sean has over 35 years experience as a chef. Honing his skills in Ireland and across
Europe he is now head chef at Mulligan's, alongside wife and proud hostess Eileen.
We are grateful to have such talented and dedicated staff. Some have been with us from the very beginning and we work
together like one big happy family.
We are still going strong and welcome in our 19th year in 2013! Our wee restaurant, decked out in the style and
charm of old Ireland, is Sydney's only Irish restaurant and has become a favourite among our guests.
Thanks to all for making us such a busy restaurant. We look forward to seeing you in 2013!
