Following the ban being lifted by the Australian Department of Immigration, U.S. rapper Snoop Dogg and his team of hip-hoppers including Bone Thugs N Harmony and Ice Cube, have given their Aussie fans a long-awaited extravaganza of thumping beats, bold vocals and musical creativity.
Being recognized as one of the most important figures in rap history certainly was a major drawcard to the team’s final concert in Perth – Bone Thugs N Harmony opened the show with their contrasting blend of rousing harmonies and aggressive, enraged vocals. Crowd favourite was their 1999 #1 hit The Crossroads, dedicated to members of their crew who had lost their lives to gang conflicts.
Next up was rapper Ice Cube, a favourite of Aussie fans; his set included impressive lighting effects, great tracks including We Be Clubbin’, You Can Do It (Put Your Back Into It) and F*@k Tha Police – he even pledged allegiance to the West Side Connection.
After what seemed to be hours, the man himself, Snoop Dogg made his grand entrance amidst huge video screens projecting images of Scarface and The Godfather, mixed with similar images of himself – the crowd erupted when he began rapping with a backing crew on electric guitar, bass, drums and two MC’s.
Snoop (Doggy) Dogg impressed and mesmerized the fans as he included favourites, I Wanna F*@k You, Who Am I (What’s My Name) and Drop It Like It’s Hot – he also paid tribute to the departed Tupac Shakur. Dressed in what looked like oversized PJ’s and pig-tails for half of his set, Snoop took a short break and returned wearing a Perth Wildcats jersey, showing his support to his West Coast fans.
